*Engineering Studies Program*

*Assistant Professor of Engineering Studies*

The Lafayette College Engineering Studies Program invites applications for
a new full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position focused on
Engineering, Social Justice, and inclusive STEM studies to begin Academic
Year 2023-2024. The program is a leader in undergraduate engineering
education, offering a unique, interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree in
engineering at an undergraduate-only liberal arts college that offers four
ABET-accredited BS engineering degrees. The new faculty member will teach
courses at the intersections of engineering, public policy, and inclusive
STEM studies. This position will help to expand the Program’s course
offerings and research related to engineering and social justice, inclusive
practices in engineering education, questions of identity in the
engineering design process, and/or equity and inclusion in the
implementation of technologies for the public good. The position is
integral to the strategic direction of our new Hanson Center for Inclusive
STEM Education and represents an exciting opportunity to help shape the
scope and impact of this interdisciplinary center as well as the Program,
Engineering Division, and College.

Preferred candidates will hold at least one degree in engineering
(undergraduate
and/or graduate) and, by July 1, 2023, will have received a Ph.D. in
engineering or other field that prepares them for this interdisciplinary
position, such as Engineering Education, Science and Technology Studies
(STS), and Engineering and Public Policy. The teaching load is five courses
per year (four in the faculty member’s first year), including sharing
teaching responsibilities for the required Engineering and Public Policy
course and offering electives from the candidate's area of expertise. Two
of those five courses will be in Inclusive STEM Studies (accessible to
students from all majors) in coordination with the Hanson Center for
Inclusive STEM Education. Candidates can find more information about
the Engineering
Studies Program (http://es.lafayette.edu/) and Hanson Center (
https://hanson.lafayette.edu/) at their websites.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, 1-2-page statement of teaching
philosophy and interests, 1-2-page statement of research interests,
curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference through Interfolio (
http://apply.interfolio.com/110333). The successful candidate will explain
clearly how their scholarly approaches connect engineering and society,
while demonstrating the potential to develop a research program that
involves undergraduate students in meaningful research experiences and
produces publications in peer-reviewed journals. Particular consideration
will be given to candidates with teaching experience and/or experience
conducting research with undergraduate students. Application materials
should demonstrate the applicant’s commitment to teaching engineering in a
liberal arts environment and address how the applicant’s teaching,
research, and/or service will support Lafayette’s commitment to diversity,
equity, and inclusion. Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2022,
with applications accepted until the position is filled.

Lafayette College is a small, private undergraduate-only institution

undergraduate engineering education since 1866. Since its inception, the
engineering division has emphasized superior education in engineering and
the liberal arts, placing a strong emphasis on student-faculty interaction.

women on the faculty and among the top 20 for Bachelor’s degrees awarded to
women. In recent years the engineering programs have been ranked in the top
15 in the nation by *U.S. News and World Report* among
undergraduate-focused institutions. Lafayette is an equal opportunity
employer and encourages applications from women and minorities.
